From the shadowy pine forests and windswept highlands of northern Sweden comes Utmarken — a debut album where the raw power of classic hard rock and power metal intertwines with the melancholic soul of Scandinavian folk music. Here, melodies soar like ravens over the fells, only to plunge into the valleys of existential struggle, solitude, and a deep-seated longing for freedom.

At the heart of Utmarken’s sound lies powerful clean vocals and the nyckelharpa, its haunting resonance carving through layers of soaring guitar leads, pounding drums, and synth-laced harmonies. Yet, this is no ordinary folk metal — there are no battle cries, no theatrical garb, no fantasy escapism. This is folk music for the forgotten outposts, hard rock for the heartland — a celebration of life on the edge of the map, where beauty and hardship walk hand in hand.

The brainchild of Mathias Gyllengahm, Utmarken, was born in a tiny rural outbuilding, far from city lights and studio polish. After early demos drew the attention of labels and respected musicians alike, Gyllengahm assembled a full band including drummer Benny Hägglund (Vintersorg) and guitarist Jörgen Vikberg. The result is an album steeped in northern soil, where tradition meets rebellion and every chorus echoes with both pride and loss.

With lyrics that traverse the vast themes of identity, struggle, depopulation, and the stark beauty of Norrland, Utmarken invites the listener into a world that is at once timeless and immediate — a musical outcry from the periphery, laced with defiance, irony, and a glimmer of midnight sun.
